A Elliot Ekko 4.8 review by Paul S:
I was looking for a traction kite to help develop my moutain boarding skills on the beach before i took to the water on my 12m Ocean Rodeo Bronco so I bought an Elliot Ekko 4.8. I did'nt want to break the bank in the process. The Ekko has a good pedigree, is German built to a very high (paragliding) standard and won the Golden Kite award for the 2002 model.

I quickly learned that the quad line traction foil Ekko is certainly not a kite for the timid, it powers on quickly, is quick, extremely agile and stable due to a small number of air vents. It is said to have a wind range between 3-25 mph. I have never tried it the top end of this range, but would think landboarding/mountainboarding at this wind speed could be a bit gnarly with this kite (unless you are very skilled). I'd either get out my small kite or be in the sea with the inflatable. An extreme "against the wind" course is however possible through a big wind window with some practice. The kite can luff and pull suddenly in less than perfect conditions, a bit like the Blade in this respect. The diagonal profiles allow a reduced bridle, enabling a optimum balance of pulling forces at the bridle points. The kite was fairly quick to set up, but lacked the user frendly touches of the Ozone Frenzy for example. After a week or two I became as one with the kite and found the 'off the line' and 'against the wind' performance very impressive. This kite goes to prove that although some manufacurers are starting to, and ultimately will monopolise the market, there is still room for the extrovert. Definately one for those who don't want to be a sheep.
